Participants Agreements at Climate Camp '09

July 30, 2009 - 10:57am

Climate Camp ‘09 is a three-day information sharing and direct action camp. We hope the camp is an example of the low emissions, friendly, supportive society that we want to live in. This agreement will help to ensure the Camp is safe and enjoyable for everyone who participates.

This site and the surrounding area is Dharawal land and we recognise the sovereignty of the Dharawal people.

This camp exists to organise and carry out non-violent direct action against the causes of climate change. We strongly recommend that participants attend a workshop on non-violence direct action during the camp.

Various community groups have been campaigning on climate change in the Sydney and Illawarra region for many years and have worked hard to form relationships with local people, media and police.

This camp can be fun but is not a festival. Climate Camp is drug and alcohol free – this means no alcohol or drugs (or being under the influence) in Climate Camp spaces or during group activities.  (If you have specific needs regarding this, please see someone from the Climate Camp Collective to see how they can support you.)

We are all responsible and accountable for our own behaviour.

There are procedures in place to deal with behaviour that breaches the participants’ agreement. There is a ‘grievance collective’, who you can contact at any time during the camp to talk about conflicts and responses to problems that come up during the camp.

We want this to be a camp where everyone feels safe and able to participate. We believe that through self-organising, community agreements and a willingness to challenge our behaviours, we can create spaces that are safer for everyone.

[This is the important bit]

In order to help make the camp as safe, effective and enjoyable as possible the organisers of the Climate Camp ask you agree to the following:

  • Commit to non-violence for the duration of Climate Camp.
  • Respect that the majority of the camp is drug and alcohol free.
  • Respect people's need to sleep at night
  • Look out for the needs of others and yourself so that everyone is able to participate fully in the camp.
  • Respect spokescouncil consensus decision-making meeting processes and camp agreements
  • Be aware of the impact your actions may have on the success of local campaigns
  • Participate in the running of the camp, including essential jobs like cooking and washing up.
  • We will make sure that it is possible to contact a member of the grievance collective at any time during the camp.

Waiver: As a condition of entry for myself, I acknowledge and accept all risks associated with and arising out of the event.  I waive any claim, right or cause of action which may arise.
